The University Safety Office (USO) provides basic safety training for staff and students at the University. However it remains a Unit (Faculty/Institute/Center/Service) responsibility to ensure that staff and students are adequately trained to carry out their tasks safely. It is therefore the Unit’s responsibility to ensure that they have suitably identified training needs for their staff. This will include suitable training to use equipment etc. as well as specific safety training courses. Students training needs must be considered before they can be deemed ‘competent’ to undertake work with high risk equipment, chemicals or biological agents.

Heads of Unit and Unit Safety Officers (and other staff with specific appointed safety roles) are required to be aware of the safety responsibilities that they have, and so are expected to attend dedicated safety training provided by the University Safety Office (USO).
